As someone who came of age in Japan during the 90s and 2000s, I experienced several economic crises and disasters. I vividly recall my mother frequently stating that our funds were in the negative. Growing up in such an environment was challenging, and it affected many children. It became common for kids to bring knives to school, and some young people turned to violence on the streets. Air max robbery, known as "Air max hunting," and "Oyaji-hunting," in which young people robbed older men and called them 'Oyaji' (meaning old guy in Japanese), were particularly prevalent. Also the notable incidents, such as Tokyo subway sarin attack, Great Hanshin Awaji Earthquake, and more. We’ve had a lot in the era.
The era was chaotic, and we had no idea what to expect from our future. The 'Gyaru' culture emerged during this tumultuous period. Gyaru looked fascinating to me, with their style with colorful clothes and particular makeup, exuding a sense of freedom. I was drawn to the mindset of self-expression and being true to oneself, even in the face of societal criticism. Dressing flamboyantly helped me feel validated as a person. This project is inspired by my memories of being a Gyaru and the culture itself. I believe that we all crave acceptance, validation, and the freedom to be ourselves without judgement or criticism. It's a way of declaring to the world that we exist and are not nobodies.
